Yesterday was such a blessing.
I got to spend some time with Cade Spinello and his mom and sister. Cade was diagnosed with a brain tumor about a year ago then suffered a stroke that essentially paralyzed the right side of his body. (For more info and to see his progress, visit http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/cader)
I have so many memories from just the two hours I spent with them that I cherish. One of them is that I taught Cade how to fingerspell his name in American Sign Language, then he went and showed everyone he saw how to do it. He was so proud of himself and I was so proud of him for how quickly he picked it up. I taught him how to say “Thank you” and a few other little words, and he was practically glowing with pride.
I can’t wait for the day when my job is to teach kids like Cader how to do things like that. I’ll be teaching them other things too, like how to walk and how to write, but I can’t wait for the extra moments when I can teach them how to spell their name using their fingers and watch them run to their mommies or daddies and glow with confidence when they teach their parents how to do it too.
